Diocesan Convention

The 58th Annual Diocesan Convention will take place October 27-28, 2017, at the Episcopal Conference Center Oakhurst (ECCO).

Guest Speakers are The Rev. Francisco J. Garcia, Jr. and The Rev. Canon Jaime Edwards-Acton

Francisco and Jaime will be leading us into conversations about how we understand our call to be in community with those who are on the margins, how we are beginning to discern that we are called to be a safe place for all of God’s people, and how to respond to this call from a place of love.

The Rev. Franciso J. Garcia

The Rev. Canon Jamie Edwards-Acton

Giving Opportunities

Annual Convention United Thank Offering

UTO logoEarlier in the year, each congregation received a UTO packet that included bookmarks, pamphlets, envelopes and little blue boxes.
We are asking for each congregation to select a representative from their delegation to present their congregation’s UTO in-gathering during the Eucharist on Oct 28 (checks should be made out to The Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin with “UTO” in the memo line…we will submit one check on behalf of the diocese).
Please talk with your Vestry/Bishop’s Committee and encourage your congregations to participate in this ingathering.

Episcopal Relief and Development and Dio SJ Emergency Fund
episcopal relief and developmentDear Sisters and Brothers,
As you know Dennis Fitzgerald, our Diocesan Episcopal Relief & Development Coordinator, contacted Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) to see how our diocese could respond to the Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County. With ERD, my discretionary account, and your generous donations, we were able to set up a Diocese of San Joaquin Emergency Relief Fund and are now assisting those affected by the Detwiler Fire .
Now that we have this fund set up we want to be prepared for the future. There will always be fires, mudslides, and other catastrophes in our communities and others. We, Called to be… In Community can be prepared to assist in the ways needed.
At our Annual Convention we will be collecting donations for  Emergency Relief at the Baptismal Vow and Eucharist Services. One half of these donations will be for the Diocese of San Joaquin Emergency Relief Fund and the other half will be forwarded to Episcopal Relief & Development. As we work in partnership with ERD we can apply for matching funds when an emergency arises and better care for those in need.
Thank you for your support.
Prison Ministry in Chowchilla
giftDear Sisters and Brothers,
The Women’s Facility in Chowchilla is the only prison in the State of California that allows Christmas gifts to be brought in for those incarcerated. Family and friends of these women are not able to send gifts and most of these women lack funds to purchase items for themselves. For over 10 years members of the Inmate Family Council and with the support of churches, business, and non-profit groups have worked to ensure that each woman incarcerated receives a holiday gift. In 2016, 2,900 gift bags containing over 20 small items were distributed.
This year I would like the people of San Joaquin to be part of this very important prison ministry. At our Annual Convention please consider bringing items that can be donated to the Inmate Family Council to be included in the gift bags.  Click  here for list of approved items.
These are the only Christmas gifts they will receive.
