Emergency Relief Fund

Dennis Fitzgerald, our Diocesan Episcopal Relief & Development Coordinator, contacted Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) to see how our diocese could respond to the Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County. He was informed that last year the Diocese of Los Angeles made a formal request to Episcopal Relief & Development (ERD) seeking assistance for victims of local fires. They used what is called a 216 Grant Application (perhaps more than you want to know) requesting $5,000 which required that the Diocese provide the seed money ($1,500) for a total amount of assistance of $6,500. We want to do the same in light of the current fires in and around the Mariposa community.

This “relief” money would be distributed to the victims of the Detwiler Fire. Here’s what we know so far:
Acres impacted 74,083 Acres, 25% contained, 3,737 firefighters assigned.
*68 Homes Destroyed
*49 minor structures destroyed
*11 Residence damaged
*1500 Structures threatened
*5894 people still evacuated.
*Number of Homes evacuated 2,680

The most significant problem for most of those who didn’t lose their homes is they have lost power so all their food in refrigerators and freezers is now unusable and needs to be replaced.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you, the people of EDSJ, for the ways in which you support this Bishop Discretionary Fund. Because of your generosity we are able to offer responses like this one. The way this will work is the relief money will be banked locally in Oakhurst (with Diocesan Council’s approval, which is canonically required) and will be distributed by our Diocesan ERD Coordinator Dennis Fitzgerald with the intended maximum amount for an individual or family at $100.00 via gift card or debit card.

If you feel inclined to offer additional support to fire victims, you can do so by sending your check donation to:
Please make your donation to:

Remember, our response will impact the lives of many.
Many thanks go to Dennis Fitzgerald for reaching out to ERD.
Thanks and Blessings EDSJ
