All EfM graduates and EfM mentors with four or more years’ association with EfM are invited to join us at the 2019 EfM Graduates retreat, held at St. Mary’s Sewanee Sept. 22-24. The retreat will focus on The Rev. Dr. Julia Gatta’s recent book, Life in Christ: Practicing Christian Spirituality.
During the retreat, Dr. Gatta will address various aspects of personal prayer and meditation and will present the theology undergirding various prayer practices. Dr. Gatta will also discuss suggestions for engaging in the practices themselves, with ample time allotted for questions and discussion. Topics will include prayer as conversation with God; intercession; meditation with Scripture, or lectio divina; and forms of devotional prayer such as the “Jesus Prayer,” the contemplation of icons, and apophatic prayer (best known as “Centering Prayer”). After each address there will be time for individual meditation to engage in a particular prayer form followed by small group discussion.
The Rev. Dr. Julia Gatta is the Bishop Frank A. Juhan professor of Pastoral Theology at the School of Theology at the University of the South. Her previous books include The Nearness of God: Parish Ministry as Spiritual Practice; and, with the Rev. Martin L. Smith, Go in Peace: The Art of Hearing Confessions. She is a spiritual director, retreat conductor, and Episcopal priest who served for 25 years in the Diocese of Connecticut.
